An amazingly insightful approach on How To Write Song.s that I’d never really thought about before crossed my screen the other day whilst doing some research.

There are so many resources you can use but I feel it’s best that you follow a set program or course so you cover all your bases otherwise you will spend a life time trying to gather all the different bits of information to make you an effective songwriter.

Now I often head over to the Ezine Articles website when wanting to learn something new or learn a new aspect of my current skills and hobbies as it is filled with usefull material.

I came across John Cowell’s article about the power of nouns in songwriting, something I hadn’t really thought long and hard about although have applied to some of my songs in the past.

Interestingly he talks about how songs resonate on an emotional level with the listener if they are hearing someones name or a place name and how the songwriters of yester year used this approach very often when writing songs. “Hey Jude” as an example or “Hollywood” by Madona

It’s true that not many of the more amateur songwriters of today use this tecnique and I really think that if we can add this approach into our mix of songs when learning How To Write Song we will discover that our listeners will feel we are not just writing about some arbitary nonsense and feel that there is something more substantial to our writing that they can relate to.

I end with something that really struck me about using nouns from John’s article -

“It brings specific information to the song that sets a context that feels real, believable and touchable. This secret goes hand in hand with the technique of “show don’t tell”. The more specific your songs are the better the listener will appreciate them. Using names of persons, places and things will do this for your song.”

Discovering your songwriting ability and learning How To Write Song needs a good basic foundation, discipline and perhaps a freeing up of the mind on a creative level like the Lyrics Writer suggests but most importantly have fun.

Ok, like everyone else my dream is to become famous. I play guitar, I am a percussionist, I also can play alittle piano. But I can’t write lyrics. I don’t know how to even start with them. Do you just like use personal experiences? Make them up at random? Can anybody please help me.

True lyricists come up with their writings by reflecting on their lives and using their own experiences. Some write about a subject that is overwhelming, like growing up, death, health disorders and diseases, etc. Some write about nature, others about a time where they felt alone.

But most importantly, a lyricist writes from their heart. None of the words have to rhyme, but it adds so much more meaning if you change the word “cool” to “amazing” or “enchanting”. Describe to the best of your ability and channel the poet within :]

How do you write an upbeat song?

Like the type that you hear on the radio. I just started writing songs, but I can only write the type that’s kind of like pop, but it’s slow. No drumbeat. Only me, and my guitar.

I kind of know some piano chords, and I’m pretty good at tapping out a tune on the piano, which I of course end up forgetting, but what’s the rule of thumb for upbeat songs?

I also have garageband, if that helps.

listen to the type of songs you want to write and make notes. Writing down some notes about theme or word pace. This might help you think of some lyrics of your own or who many words you need per line to match the tempo you want to achieve.

No. That would take intelligence, something computers don’t have. AI is nowhere near sophisticated enough for that.
